Lassoing a Post or Cleat from your Boat- Editor H2ONotes [ 10/2/2008 - 22:49 ] # by Captain Jack Klang
Tying up at a dock no longer requires a dock attendant to take your me, nor does a crew person need to jump ashore. It can be done from the deck of your boat. If you can see it and you have enough line, anyone can do it.
Begin with the concept that all lines originate from your deck and return to your deck for attaching. This facilitates line adjustment from onboard at any time. It also allows you to maintain control of your boat’s position at the dock. more...

Find and stay in the best pressure- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/28/2008 - 19:17 ] # Even a little more wind pressure can make a huge difference in yuur downwind performance. So whenever you are on a run, a big key to success is locating better wind velocity, getting your boat into that pressure, and then staying in it as long as possible. Wind velocity is an important strategic factor because it allows you to sail lower and faster. In addition, you can stay in each puff much longer on a run than on a beat (because you are sailing with the wind, not against it), so there is more to be gained by getting to the best puffs quickly. Here are some thoughts on how to do this. more...

Guidelines for good headsail shape- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/3/2008 - 13:48 ] # Since the jib or genoa provides a relatively large share of the driving force for your boat. it's key to optimize this sail's shape. Unlike the mainsail, the jib is not attached to a rigid spar. so you can't fine-tune its shape nearly as much. That's whv the headsail should get priority when adjusting the backstay (which affects both main and jib). However, you must be sure to set up the jib so it works in concert with the main (e.g. it doesn't close the slot and cause backwind). ..more
