Federal court upholds Michigan ballast water law- Editor H2ONotes [ 11/23/2008 - 14:59 ] # TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A federal appeals court Friday upheld a Michigan law designed to prevent oceangoing freight ships from bringing invasive species to the Great Lakes in their ballast water.
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati rejected a challenge to the statute filed by nine shipping companies and associations. They claimed the measure interferes with interstate commerce and is pre-empted by federal law. more...

USA. Coast Guard to conduct pollution response training in Sturgeon Bay- Editor H2ONotes [ 10/21/2008 - 06:53 ] # Members from the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment (MSD) Sturgeon Bay will be conducting pollution response training beginning October 22, 24 and 28, 2008.
This is the second time MSD Sturgeon Bay has coordinated pollution response training, which included boom deployment exercises in Marinette, Wis. and Menominee, Mich.

The Muskegon workshop is scheduled for November 7th at the Bayside Centre which is located at 3006 Lakeshore Dr. The Bay City workshop is scheduled for December 5th at the Doubletree Hotel on the Riverfront.
