How to Find a Fishing Guide

  #

Open Communication matters. It is important that you provide the guide all the information they need so that they will figure out what kind of fishing trip is best for you. Be sure to be honest in telling the guide how much experience you have regarding fishing. This will help them to know what advice and tips to give you so that you can make the most out of your time. more...

Raising small fry for frying pan

  #

It sounds like a place where trout go to learn good manners.

But the Ringwood Fish Culture Station is where they and more than a million salmon get their start each year.

Nestled in the trees off Highway 48, just north of Stouffville, the station hums with the sounds of big fans and motors that keep water circulating in huge tanks, each containing thousands of sac-fry – the little fishies that have made the leap from roe to eager swimmers.  more...

The king of all fishing trips

  #

Manitowoc's Matt Demmin, right, a charter captain at Kewaunee, was just as excited as client Steve Karpinen when the big lake's sometimes-finicky salmon provided fast action. Steve Karpinen of Sturgeon Bay made sure everyone knew he had reeled in another Lake Michigan king on an Aug. 21 trip off Kewaunee. Submitted photosIt wasn't a state-record catch, but a fish tale with roots in three lakeshore counties was a trip of a lifetime for 53-year-old Steve Karpinen of Sturgeon Bay.

By the time the lines were reeled in after a 3½-hour evening trip out of Kewaunee on Aug. 21, Karpinen and caregivers Ken and Lisa Jeansonne of Sturgeon Bay had 11 salmon in the cooler.

Karpinen is developmentally disabled but lives on his own with a roommate. The Jeansonnes have provided daily assistance for more than 13 years.  more...

Fly-fishing for these salmon is simple, fun

  #

photoSAULT STE. MARIE, Ontario -- Going after pink salmon is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to catch salmon on a fly rod. The techniques are so simple and so much fun that they should call this Salmon Fishing 101.

The chinook salmon runs were pretty sparse in Michigan tributaries to lakes Michigan and Huron this week, apparently running late during this unusually cool and wet summer.   more...

Antique tackle in vogue for Michigan man

  #
PhotoNAPOLEON, Mich. - When you go bass fishing with Bill Sonnett, be prepared to turn back the clock and turn out the lights.

That is because Sonnett, of Jackson, Mich., is a fan of vintage fishing tackle and using it at night to catch largemouth bass. After an evening fishing with him on Stony Lake here in Jackson County, it is easy to understand why.

"I like night fishing because it's quiet, there's nobody on the lake," Sonnett begins. For his style of fishing, by the way, he adds, "the hotter and muggier the better." He licks his chops at the prospect of a sultry summer evening when it has been in the 90s all day and promises to cool down to just 75 or 80. Big bass will be actively feeding in the shallows then.   more...

Dave Richey: Fishing in the fog

  #
A solid white wall hung in the air over Lake Michigan as we headed out to fish for salmon.

The fog was thick enough to cut with a dull butter knife, and visibility was limited to 20 feet.

This reminded me of those old horror movies where a wraith or some type of monster would come looming up out of the fog with evil intent. Fog always seemed to figure heavily in such movies, and I didn't know whether the Mummie or The Creature From The Black Lagoon was dead ahead, off our stern or to our port or starboard sides. The bow of our fishing boat was invisible from the stern.   more...

Department of Natural Resources expounds on bait ban

  #

When the baiting ban was announced following last week's discovery of chronic wasting disease in a deer in Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources and newspapers got many calls and e-mails from angry hunters.

Most thought the DNR had overacted and predicted a reduction in hunter numbers, and some said they would hunt in other states. One man fumed that he would hunt in Illinois, failing to recognize that baiting is illegal in that state and 23 others.   more...

Ontario's Rice Lake draws 'bass guys'

  #

photoRICE LAKE, Ontario -- We were visiting friends Bob and Barb Campbell at Lake Muskoka when my wife mentioned that our next stop would be Rice Lake, about a two-hour drive to the southeast.

"Why would you want to go there? It's cloudy and full of weeds," said Barb, whose cottage in the rocky Laurentian Shield country sits on some of the clearest fresh water you'll find anywhere. "The only people who go to Rice Lake are fishermen."  more...

Man says he found dead shark in Lake Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — There's no telling what might turn up in Lake Michigan.

Rich Fasi of Traverse City says he found a dead 2-foot shark in the water while fishing on West Grand Traverse Bay on Wednesday.

The saltwater fish was a juvenile blacktip shark, George Burgess, director of the Florida Program For Shark Research at the University of Florida, told the Traverse City Record-Eagle.   more...

Fly Fishing for Coarse Fish

  #

One of the most memorable fish that I have ever caught to took my fly in Hat Creek riffle in northern California. We were “high-sticking” for trout in the fast runs between the trailing weed. If you haven’t had the pleasure, this technique involves holding the rod high and trundling a weighted nymph on a short line along the bottom with only the leader wetted. I’ll confess that since this isn’t exactly my favourite way of fishing, my mind had wandered, but if you have a longer attention span than mine, the idea is to strike every time the leader hesitates.   more...
