NEWPORT, N.C. - A U.S. district judge sentenced a Newport, N.C., man to 60 months probation on Sept. 16, and the court imposed restitution in the amount of $45,292.78 for a false distress call that resulted in search and rescue efforts from multiple agencies.

On Sept. 20, 2007, Joe D. Mills Jr. used a handheld VHF radio from his front yard to fraudulently report a vessel taking on water to Coast Guard Sector North Carolina. The distress call was recorded and specifically referenced the Coast Guard.   more...

Don't let a lightning storm strike you off guard

  #

A century later, Michigan weather was in the national news again. This time, the outcome was happier: BreAnna Helsel, 16, was hit by lightning on June 6 as she closed a window at her family's Blanchard home during a rainstorm, but she survived.  more...

West Michigan Underwater Preserve would feature Lake Michigan shipwrecks

  #

By Eric Gaertner

About 8,000 ships have become wrecked in the Great Lakes, according to researchers, and the cold, fresh water keeps them better preserved than those found in oceans.

In West Michigan, the shipwrecks mainly came from the local traffic of lumber schooners or small passenger steamers and vessels in transit from Milwaukee or Chicago to the Straits of Mackinac, shipwreck historian and researcher Brendon Baillod said.

Shifting Winds Affect the Mids' Sailing Program

  #
A crew of Mids learns the ropes on a Navy 44 off Annapolis, but new academy guidelines have cut its chances of making an ocean voyage.
By Angus Phillips

Spring is in the air. Around the Cheasapeake, boatyards are buzzing as drydocked sail and power boats are readied for the season. An exception is at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, where a change in philosophy is raising concern for one of the recent rites of passage for midshipmen.

For years, mids by the hundreds went to sea in the summer on one or another of the academy's fleet of 44-foot sloops to spend a week or two in close quarters, dealing with whatever the ocean threw at them between here and New England.

Perch poised for lake revival

  #
Perch on rebound in Lake MichiganBy James Janega

It was the middle of the day, and rainy and cold, hardly ideal for perch fishing on Lake Michigan. But then, say fishermen and fish biologists, it's been quite a while since it was ideal for perch fishing on the Great Lakes.

For years, there haven't been many perch.

Nevertheless, Tim Krell, 45, a carpenter and optimist, stood on the dull side of Navy Pier with a pair of rods this week, slid a hook through a minnow and tossed it at Chicago's water-filtration plant. There was plenty of room to cast. The other fishermen had given up.
