About 8,000 ships have become wrecked in the Great Lakes, according
to researchers, and the cold, fresh water keeps them better preserved
than those found in oceans.
In West Michigan, the shipwrecks mainly came from the local traffic
of lumber schooners or small passenger steamers and vessels in transit
from Milwaukee or Chicago to the Straits of Mackinac, shipwreck
historian and researcher Brendon Baillod said. more...

Shifting Winds Affect the Mids' Sailing Program- Editor H2ONotes [ 4/9/2008 - 00:18 ] # By Angus Phillips
Spring is in the air. Around the Cheasapeake, boatyards are buzzing as drydocked sail and power boats are readied for the season. An exception is at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, where a change in philosophy is raising concern for one of the recent rites of passage for midshipmen.
For years, mids by the hundreds went to sea in the summer on one or
another of the academy's fleet of 44-foot sloops to spend a week or two
in close quarters, dealing with whatever the ocean threw at them
between here and New England.

Perch poised for lake revival- Editor H2ONotes [ 4/8/2008 - 23:46 ] # By James Janega
It was the middle of the day, and rainy and cold, hardly ideal for
perch fishing on Lake Michigan. But then, say fishermen and fish
biologists, it's been quite a while since it was ideal for perch
fishing on the Great Lakes.
For years, there haven't been many perch.
Nevertheless, Tim Krell, 45, a carpenter and optimist, stood on the dull side of Navy Pier with a pair of rods this week, slid a hook through a minnow and tossed
it at Chicago's water-filtration plant. There was plenty of room to
cast. The other fishermen had given up.
