"It's a passion for exploring. I love going places and finding things nobody's been to before and sharing that through photos and video," said Thaddius Bedford of Mayfield, president of the Manitou Passage Underwater Preserve.  more...

Winter Storage Primer

  #

Twenty years ago, my wife and I fulfilled a dream. We purchased a property that included a vintage Victorian house and two large pole barns. Our home is located roughly halfway between Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes in Central New York, in the midst of a sailing paradise. Three nights after we moved in, we discovered that we owned a business too. That night, a stranger appeared, asking if I rented space for winter boat storage. Now mind you, I had not purchased the property in contemplation of starting a storage business. I had no idea how much to charge, no rental agreement, and not a clue what renting storage space entailed. So naturally, I said “Yes”. We’ve been in the storage business ever since.  more...

Endangered natural wonders worth seeing

  #

(Forbes.com)The earth is warming, glaciers are receding and oceans are changing. As a result, habitats are shrinking and species are dying--and many tourists want to see them before they disappear.

As scientists have studied and described the Earth's transformations, some more recent and rapid than others, their observations have given way to a phenomenon dubbed "doomsday tourism." The concept is simple: Travelers seek out imperiled destinations and try to experience their grandeur before they vanish.  more...

Heard this winter will be colder?

  #

The Farmers' Almanac says that another long and "numbing" winter will hit the Great Lakes region of the Midwest this year, with below-average temperatures and heavy snows.

Many have been waiting for that prediction, because the iconic publication -- around since 1818 -- stood out from the pack of weather forecasters last year in correctly predicting a long, hard winter for the Midwest with above-average snowfalls.  more...

Shippers, activists clash over cargo sweeping

  #

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Day after day, ships longer than three football fields depart Great Lakes ports after picking up or delivering loads of iron ore, coal and other cargo. Reaching open water, crews wash the decks with high-powered hoses.

It's called "cargo sweeping," because residues that spill onto decks during loading and unloading are swept overboard. The U.S. Coast Guard estimates that 1 million pounds of such debris is washed into the lakes every year. more...

  #

Autumn in Michigan offers warm days, quiet lakes, and unbelievably beautiful displays of leaves changing colors. Photo of local lighthouse makes swell beer coaster

  #

GRAND RAPIDS -- People visiting the Great Lakes may notice the work of Grand Rapids photographer Steven Huyser-Honig on beer coasters in nearby bars and restaurants.

Huyser-Honig, 52, is the grand prize winner in the professional division for a photo contest sponsored by Chicago-based Biodiversity Project's Great Lakes Forever and St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc.

The public-awareness effort hopes the image of the Grand Haven lighthouse surrounded by Lake Michigan spray on a windy November day gets people thinking about the lakes' value.  more...

Dreams of a wild island

  #
I have a habit of daydreaming over maps.

When I open my Rand McNally to pages 54 and 55, I see not just the enigmatic shape of my home state of Minnesota, but all the places I've been and all of the places I've yet to explore.

My eyes have been drawn many times to the upper-right-hand corner of the page, where a sliver of land in Lake Superior edges into view. A dotted line crosses the blue ink of the lake, connecting the land to the town of Grand Portage: the ferry route to Isle Royale National Park.   more...

Help Kids Stay Safe By Becoming A Life Jacket Loaner Site

  #

ALEXANDRIA, VA, Sept. 4, 2008 -- The easiest way to ensure a child's safety on the water is to make sure they wear a life jacket that fits. But children's growth spurts or last minute changes to the roster of invited guests do not always make that easy. However, your boat club or local waterfront business may be able to help if it works with the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Life Jacket Loaner Program.   more...

Vented Loop

  #

What is a vented loop

Vented loop: inverted U-shaped pipe with a vent at the top, used as a section in toilet discharge lines to prevent back siphoning.

vented loopVented loops are a necessity on board for some marine systems. You have vented loops (anti-siphon valves) or should have them, as part of an engine exhaust system, or plumbing for bilge pumps, or the marine head. The reason you have them is to stop a siphon or backflow of water in the system. With a siphon, the water can travel the wrong way in a plumbing system. In the case of a marine head the water can go back into the toilet and overflow it.

Vented loops are simple devices and very rarely go wrong, but when they do the results are catastrophic. The boats potentially sinks!   more...
