Dumpster Diving

  #

Where are the bargains found? Sometimes, in the parking lot.Long ago, in the prosperous times before any oil crisis or world trade recessions, I met a man who was sitting in a boatyard dumpster. I tactfully lobbed my bag of garbage well clear of him and we fell into conversation, as one does with strangers in dumps.

"Looks like rain again," I observed.

"Sure does," the stranger replied. "Guess I'd better get a move on. Don't want all this stuff to get soaked."

He spoke with a cultured accent, but I noticed he had the weathered hands of a deep–sea sailor.

"Which stuff's that?" I continued. He was eyeing up a piece of metal poking out from under his pile of junk. And with a heave he dragged out his prize. It was a substantial bronze turnbuckle that looked seized–up.  more...

For Those About To Rocna…

  #

rocna_diagramI’ve decided to get a Rocna anchor and try it out aboard Two Lucky Fish. The Rocna is one of the new generation of Funny Looking Anchors we’ve discussed here previously.

I’ve got 6-kg model on its way from Suncoast Marine in Vancouver, the North American manufacturer. This should be plenty big enough for my C-Dory 22, especially considering that I don’t usually anchor out when it’s really rough, and I cruise in areas where some sort of shelter is nearly always close at hand. I don’t need a hurricane anchor.

Wind Sheer

  #

wind sheerWhen there is wind-speed, there is wind sheer! What then is wind sheer?Several physical effects will have impact on the size of the sheered wind. Sometimes the wind layers are mixed with higher layer wind in wind gusts, so it might be a good idea to study some additional meteorological effects for better understanding and to be able to make better decisions. The examples are valid for the North hemisphere and then, the opposite is valid for the south hemisphere.  more...

Garmin Shadow Drive Autopilot Interface

  #

by Tim Flanagan,GarminGHP10Navagear

The GHP 10’s patented Shadow Drive™ technology gives boaters the security of knowing they maintain control even when relying upon the autopilot. The Shadow Drive system automatically disengages the autopilot if the helm is turned, allowing the helmsman to maneuver the boat. The autopilot automatically re-engages when a steady course is held by the helmsman.

MOBi-lert 720i by Mobilarm

  #
By Michael Lovett

On a calm night off the east coast of Australia a few years back, 10-year-old Simon Pallister fell off the family sailboat. It took one hour for  Pallister's parents to notice his absence and another eight for a helicopter crew to locate the victim and dispatch a fishing boat that picked him up, luckily, alive.

Cruisers Net Growing by Leaps and Bounds

  #
By Fred Bagley

A good product will sell itself. That's what has happened to the Little Current Cruisers Net based in Little Current, Ontario. (See "North Channel Retrospective," Cruising World, May 2006.) Serving Lake Huron's North Channel during July and August, this VHF-based cruisers net has experienced remarkable growth.

Roy Eaton founded the LCCN in 2004 with the help of local restaurant owner Bruce O'Hare.

Self-Leveling Mast Mount by Scanstrut

  #
By Andrew Burton

Many boats have their radar antenna mounted up the mast, but if it's fixed in position, when the boat heels, the units effectiveness will decrease. We wrote about Scanstrut's Self-Leveling Backstay Radar Mount earlier this year in Cruising World, now they're coming out with a Self-Leveling Mast Mount. It will allow you to mount your antenna as high as possible, increasing your radar's usable range.

Infrared Technology for the Masses

  #
By Tony Bessinger

The Miami International Boat Show, held each year in mid-February, is a great venue for checking out new electronics. Manufacturers use the show to showcase new products, and this year's crop was outstanding. I spent two full days in a hall within the show dedicated solely to electronics manufacturers, and one afternoon and evening on the water getting real-life demonstrations.

One of the coolest products was from a company named FLIR, which stands for Forward Looking Infrared.

SPOT Satellite Messenger

  #
By Tony Bessinger

One of the products introduced at this year's Miami International Boat Show was a neat little orange device called the SPOT Satellite Messenger. Touted as a safety/location-reporting device, SPOT uses position data obtained from the GPS satellite network to report its position to the Globalstar satellite network. Using both of these networks, and four buttons mounted on the SPOT, it has the ability to do several things of importance to those who spend time in remote areas, including offshore.

Global Ship-Reporting System Credited in Rescue of Sailor

  #
By Kitty Martin

A 43-year-old sailor from Wailuku, Hawai'i, was rescued last month, after his 30-foot trimaran began taking on water 230 miles off the coast of Maui. The sailor notified U.S. Coast Guard rescue coordinators and activated his EPIRB after the starboard bow broke off, and the center hull began taking on water as the result of a puncture.

The Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System, which celebrates 50 years of operation in 2008, played a crucial role in helping save the man.
