Final wipeout leaves fans angry at hydros

This was supposed to be the Miss Budweiser team's triumphant cap on 42 years of racing in the unlimited hydroplane series.

Instead, it turned into an unusual weekend of racing that left a bitter taste in the mouths of some racers and many fans.

Because of brutal conditions caused by swift upstream wind and a barrage of pleasure boats on the St. Clair River, race officials canceled Sunday's final of the Bluewater International Hydrofest, bringing this year's series to an abrupt end. Hordes of spectators were upset because they had waited around all day, only to be told at 4:30 that no final race would take place.

"Everything was in line, everything was ready to go -- even the Porta Johns," said Dan Sayers, 52, of St. Clair. "All the concessions were excellent. But there were no boats to race."   more...

I moved this discussion comment to this post... It was attached to a wrong article on 8/28/2004...editor........... International Hydrofest in the City of St. Clair What a disorganized mess. People paid for weekend passes, paid for parking (including to local churches and local school buses being used for transportation) and the race was cancelled for Sunday. I do agree that the raceneeded to be cancelled but what happened to everyone's money? There were several of us who had planned an outting for Sarnia Bay Marina, that weekend...we were told the boats would be allowed to pass every two hours, beginning at 10 a.m. (for 15 minutes) Several boats arrived at 9:45 a.m. and had to wait until 12 noon to pass. Who would want to sit there for over two hours, when they had been told they would be allowed to pass at 10 a.m.???? What a mess! If they do have it next year, let's hope they are better organized.8/28/2004 5:38:34 PM
