The species is very, very, very, very old. Like 136 million years old, meaning sturgeon were around when dinosaurs walked the Earth, says the Great Lakes Lake Sturgeon Web site.
Though they're called lake sturgeon, the fish also inhabit rivers such as the Detroit River. An average adult is around 5 feet long and 200 pounds. Sturgeon are the largest indigenous freshwater fish in the Great Lakes and surrounding rivers. more...
