A link only carp love


The majority of Great Lakes states and 50 members of Congress are right: It's time to cut the link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.

The artificial link connecting Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River basin should be severed now to impede the movement of Asian carp toward the Great Lakes and to restore the natural balance between the two water systems. People have demonstrated an ability to bring fish to, or near, extinction through overfishing. What we need is a solution to overfish asian carp. Half joking, we were discussing a new sport -- how about states licensing shotgun carp hunting? In a cross between hunting and fishing, angler-marksmen can buy licenses, directly funding the various DNRs and enjoy the sport of plugging away at leaping carp. It would be better than strangling one of the leading economic forces in the region.1/5/2010 7:02:43 PM
