Boaters safe after 3 days adrift in Lake Michigan


ST. JOSEPH -- Three Indiana men were safe after three days on a boat adrift in Lake Michigan, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

A crew from the St. Joseph station towed the 25-foot Buzzard Bait II to the station just after midnight this morning, Petty Officer First Class Joseph Margherone said. The boat was located nearly 11 miles west of St. Joseph after occupants launched flares Monday night as a Coast Guard search helicopter flew overhead.

A Coast Guard press release said the trio left a Michigan City, Ind., marina Friday for a trip to Florida via Chicago and the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.

Margherone said the men told their rescuers they had trouble with both engines on Friday. The trio agreed to try to drift to shore. On Monday afternoon, they decided to radio the Coast Guard after hearing storm warning broadcasts.   more...
