Raucous celebration booted off Gull Island

ImageThe free-for-all celebration on Gull Island is dead in the water.

Public access to the vacant isle that's long been home to a legendary boating beer bash will be barred on June 24 -- the date set for the party that draws up to 5,000 revelers each year to drink, dance and party far from the nearest toilet.

The nonprofit We Are Here Foundation last week licensed the 4-acre Lake St. Clair island from its owner, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and obtained a permit to bar access to the island from June 23-June 26. St. Clair County marine patrols will shoo boaters away if necessary.

Instead, volunteers will be clearing trash from the island, said Tom Cleaver, president of the foundation.

"If you want to paint us as the guys who killed (it), go ahead and do it," he said. "We're going to clean up the island. If it takes (the party) out of there, we're willing to be the bad guys."

Boaters fear the loosely organized Jobbie Nooner party they've celebrated with gusto will become more regulated and perhaps lose the spirit that has evolved from 30 years of unsanctioned revelry.   more...
