Foolish choices add to the cost of natural disasters

Snow. Ice. Rain and freezing rain. Freakish warmth with spotty flooding, followed by brutal cold. All in a span of 48 hours.

Yes, Michigan is looking pretty good these days, at least compared to other parts of the nation and world where the forces of nature have spawned death and massive destruction in recent weeks. Here, it's just winter. No earthquakes, hurricanes, tidal waves, flash floods or mudslides. There is something to be said for stability.

With some grumbling, people here generally adjust to the elements. Elsewhere, they continue trying to defy them. Millions of people are living in places where millions of people were never intended to live, and the results are often catastrophic.   more...
