Coast Guard takes mission abroad

The U.S. Coast Guard finds itself engaged in combat on two fronts: in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and at home combating terrorist threats to the United States.

Back at home on the Great Lakes, the mission isn’t expected to change much, but it has a heavier emphasis on patrolling sensitive areas.

“We’re going to be doing the same things we’ve been doing, with the added mission of homeland security,” said Richard Hupf, the officer in charge of Coast Guard Station Sturgeon Bay. “It involves a few stepped-up patrols for bridges, chemical plants, Bay Ship.
