Durbin: Don't let landmark status be safe harbor for S.S. Badger


As the last coal-powered steamship on the Great Lakes moved a step closer to being protected as a National Historic Landmark, Sen. Dick Durbin pressured top federal officials Wednesday to stop the vessel from polluting Lake Michigan.

In strongly worded letters to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Sen. Jay Rockefeller, chairman of the committee that oversees the Coast Guard, Durbin opposed special exemptions that would allow the S.S. Badger car ferry to keep dumping at least 509 tons of toxic coal ash into the lake every year.  more...
