Dead gizzard shad on shoreline just nature taking care of itself

Dead and dying gizzard shad are littering the Lake Erie shoreline. It is a spring phenomenon that is needlessly worrying people who see and smell nature's way of saying the non-native fish don't really belong here.

Gizzard shad somehow found their way to the Great Lakes, most likely from the Ohio River. They are now one of the most abundant species in Lake Erie with a tenuous hold in what is their northernmost range.  more...
