Volunteers help make lakes glisten

Michigan has water everywhere.

Apart from the Great Lakes that almost surround it, it has glistening inland lakes and sparkling rivers that are drawing new attention from people who want to protect them.

State environmental officials and hundreds of lake lovers are beginning their 30th year of testing the clarity, level of nutrients and growth of plants in Michigan lakes.

Meanwhile, another cadre of volunteers and scientists is surveying Michigan rivers in an attempt to understand the quality and biology of the flowing streams and the impact of any pollution.

Altogether, the efforts represent an increased concern over quality of Michigan surface waters and their suitability for swimming, fishing and boating.  more...
