Bell tolls for all lost in Lakes

DETROIT -- Captains of vessels from the Great Lakes and their connecting waterways stood side by side Sunday, and each rang the bell of the Great Lakes Steamer Octorara to honor the men and women who have perished in the estimated 10,000 shipwrecks strewn across their waters.

The eight tolls -- one for each of the five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Detroit and St. Clair rivers and Lake St. Clair, and the men and women who died in military service -- rang sharply through the pews at Mariners' Church of Detroit.  more...

When I read that 8 bells were sounded, I immediately thought of nautical and that the "watch" was over. Perhaps as this should be the reason for 8 bells not the number bodies of water.. Tom Hyatt11/15/2006 2:35:25 PM
