Ontario government investigating report of illegal dive to Edmund Fitzgerald


SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (AP) -- The Ontario Ministry of Culture is reviewing allegations an illegal dive was made to the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior.

The Whitefish Point Preservation Society of Paradise, Mich., alleges that the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, led by Thomas Farnquist, executive director of Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, conducted an illegal dive to the legendary shipwreck nearly three years ago.

"I cannot confirm, nor deny, whether there was an unauthorized dive to the Edmund Fitzgerald," said Michael Johnson, manager of the ministry's Heritage Operations Unit.    more...

The White Fish Point Preservation Society, is as usual, leveling false and harmful charges against the GLSHS for doing nothing more than taking sonar readings from a substantial distance - certainly not qualified as a dive, survey or the collection of data. I trust the Canadian Government will come to conclude what those already know in the US - the WPPS plays fast and loose with the facts to to further their personal agenda of destroying GLSHS, one of the most reputable and scholorly of dive organizations on the Great Lakes.3/18/2005 7:58:19 AM
