EDITORIAL: Treat Lake St. Clair like the heart of the Great Lakes

Michigan is blessed to be surrounded by the largest system of fresh water on Earth. These bodies of water hold more than 90 percent of the fresh surface water in the United States. The lakes literally define Michigan. They are a priceless and irreplaceable natural resource.

Unfortunately, sometimes we do not treat the Great Lakes with the sensitivity and respect they deserve. It was not long ago that we used the lakes as a dumping area for trillions of gallons of raw sewage and uncounted tons of toxic chemicals. By the end of the 1960s, the Great Lakes were dying. This began to change in 1970 with the passage of the federal Clean Water Act. Since then, we have made considerable progress in addressing past abuses and protecting the lakes for the enjoyment of current and future generations.   more...
