Ancient lake's remains found

Chicago Tribune - A decade of wetlands restoration at Pratt's Wayne Woods Forest Preserve in Wayne has taught workers what to expect: topsoil often degraded by years of farming, buried irrigation tiles, dense layers of muck and peat. But environmentalists sizing up a potential restoration site last summer along Brewster Creek discovered a big surprise a dozen feet down.

"It became apparent when we got past the peat layers that the peat was on top of what had been a glacial lake," said Maggie Zoellner, natural resource management coordinator for the DuPage County Forest Preserve District.  more...
