Cormorants are here to stay


Cormorants, to many Lake Erie fishermen who have watched their numbers explode in a decade, are a four-letter word.

But donít expect too much management action - translation: cormorant extermination - on the lake under a proposed federal rule.

In all, 24 state fish and wildlife agencies- including those in Ohio and Michigan - plus tribal fisheries managers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture would be able to control local cormorant populations, on a case-by-case basis, to protect recreational fisheries and commercial aquaculture operations.

But, says biologist Steve Barry, "we donít have any evidence to definitively say that cormorants are causing any damage to Lake Erie sport fish populations."  more...
