Avian botulism resurfaces

  #
After two years of relative quiet, avian botulism has again resurfaced in Northern Michigan. Results from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment tests confirm that botulism E is killing migratory waterfowl and as a result, the birds are washing up on area beaches.  more...

GREAT LAKES STATES BY THE NUMBERS: Minnesota

  #
Another beautifully-named place, Minnesota, like Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio, is a state named after a river. The Dakota word means "sky blue water" or "water that reflects the sky" and I was intrigued to learn that as the first half of this name, Minne, means "water", that "Minneapolis" means "city of lakes". I am amazed at the power of names, how learning their meanings actually can resest one's view of a region and not only help foster appreciation of that region's attributes, but display how those attributes were once seen as so important, so vital, that they were the very reason for the name itself. more...

Lake Erie shipwrecks, well-preserved by fresh water, are favorites among divers

  #
The marine forecast is perfect. Winds are southwest at 5 knots and waves are 1 foot or less. The surface of Lake Erie is almost placid, beckoning a local diver to don his gear and dive 200 feet to the lake floor below. He begins his descent through tepid water, but as he passes through the thermocline the water temperature drops 30 degrees, cold water envelops his body and visibility is limited.

What’s on your Great Lakes bucket list?

  #
“The glaciers made you, and now you’re mine” is a song lyric from a Canadian folk rock band called the Great Lakes Swimmers. The song — “Your Rocky Spine” — is a metaphoric love poem about the region. The words perfectly capture the affinity I now feel for Lake Michigan. A wilderness writing course brought me face to face with a Great Lake for the first time in my life last weekend. We camped at Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area in Manistee, Mich. Despite the cold, rainy weather, this native Texan had the ... more...

Lessons in Suspending the Ego

  #

FirstPerson_17-8

The relationship between rowing and spirituality struck me a few weeks ago. Not because it is a meditation or has some Zen-like quality—both of which are true—but because rowing is a metaphor for life.

I’ve only been rowing for a few seasons. I am still a novice. But about a month ago, I experienced The Moment. I had about 10 consecutive strokes when it felt as if the boat was moving and I was still. I was not pulling the boat with the oars.  more...
