Fox 8 Explores Salt Mine Below Lake Erie

  #
Have you ever wondered where all the rock salt that melts all the ice and snow on our highways and roads comes from?

Most of the salt is from a mine under Lake Erie just off of downtown Cleveland.

For half a century, Cargill Deicing Technology has been mining salt from underneath Lake Erie. The mine is part of the Great Eastern Salt Basin, one of the world’s largest salt beds, with tunnels that are 20 feet high and 45 feet wide.

The salt mine is different than most salt mines because it’s located right in downtown Cleveland.  more...

Chicago River Flowing Backwards Would Be Least of Region's Concerns

  #

The headlines were alarming: "Drought Could Reverse Flow of Chicago River," hailed the website of WLS-TV, the local ABC News affiliate. "Ongoing Drought Could Send the Chicago River Flowing in Reverse," read Smithsonian magazine's normally sedate web pages.

It turns out, a backwards flow may be the least of the river’s concerns.  more...

On a slow boat to Mackinac

  #
There’s plenty of time to savor the pleasures of Lake Huron when a sailor vows to sail every inch.

Long ago, before engines, sailors had to wait for wind, and that’s exactly what I did for hours. My Westsail 32 Antares sat on a motionless sea. The current flowing down into the river carried me slowly back south—I was making negative progress. The boat drifted in circles. The stillness was complete. Finally, mid-afternoon, a zephyr stirred the water and the sails gently filled. A line of bubbles trickled off the rudder and I turned the bow northward.

Most sailboats take days to cover the distance from Port Huron at the south end of Lake Huron to Mackinac Island. Race boats sometimes make the course in less than 20 hours, but aboard Antares I had no illusions of matching their speed, as she is better suited to ocean tradewind sailing than to the often light and fickle breezes of the Great Lakes in midsummer. After motoring against the strong current of the St. Clair River from Detroit that morning, I was determined to sail the entire distance to Mackinac Island, regardless of how long it took. Anyone can motor through calms and headwinds, but I had plenty of time, lots of patience and shelves full of books.  more...

Walleye, Yellow Perch hatches below average in Lake Erie Western Basin

  #
Walleye and Yellow Perch hatches in Lake Erie's Western Basin were below average in 2012. That is the word from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The numbers come from the ODNR's yearly survey which is done in August every year.

In that survey, DNR trawlers drag nets through targeted waters to collect and count the fish species in a designated area. In 2012, only about two young-of-the-year walleyes were collected per hectare of water. A hectare measures out roughly to 2.5 acres of water.

Normally, nine young-of-the-year walleyes are found per hectare.  more...

Low Great Lakes' water levels threaten South Port Sailing

  #

Members of the South Port Sailing Club in Tecumseh met Thursday night to talk about how to salvage the 2013 boating season.

Members say water levels in the Great Lakes have dropped so low, they can't use their marina unless they go ahead with an expensive dredging operation.

The latest water bulletin issued by the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans say levels in Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie remain below average.  more...

Snyder plans 'emergency' action on Great Lakes harbors

  #
Gov. Rick Snyder said Friday his administration is developing plans to take "emergency" action to deal with Great Lakes harbors plagued by record-low water levels.

Speaking to newspaper editors and publishers attending the annual Michigan Press Association conference, Snyder said he will unveil the plans Feb. 7 when he presents his 2013-14 fiscal year budget to the Legislature.

In December, the Lake Huron and Lake Michigan system was a mean of 576.15 feet above sea level for the month, just beneath the all-time low mean of 576.2 feet for December set in 1964. Lake St. Clair was at 572.63 feet, just above the record low of 571.1 feet set in 1964. more...

Detroit, blue city

  #
Earlier this month, two years of intensive research, data collection, and community engagement culminated in the release of Detroit Future City, a strategic framework report that will serve as a roadmap toward a long term (50+ years) vision for the city of Detroit. One of its key recommendations is that "blue infrastructure" be developed on Detroit's vacant lands and along its roadways in order to promote water quality and decrease the burden stormwater places on Detroit's stressed sewer system.  more...

Lake Erie's wind project needs Ohio's help with permits

  #

The company planning to place wind turbines in Lake Erie is gearing up to meet a deadline for federal funds to help pay for the project.

The Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation, or LEEDCo, today named former NorTech energy consultant David Karpinski vice president of operations.

Karpinski says LEEDCo has one year to complete engineering designs and get the state permits to qualify for a nearly $50 million federal grant.  He says part of his job is to make sure regulators in Columbus are on board with the project.  more...

comments Lake Erie off to another slow start for ice cover

  #
The snowbelt took a beating last week. Thompson Township in Geauga County had 26.3 inches of snow on the ground on Friday. Chardon had 21 inches, Kirtland had 18, and Mentor had just over 9.

Blame it on a lack of ice on Lake Erie. Open water means it's open season for the snow belt.  more...

Great Lakes pizzas raise $6,000 for litter reduction, Belle Isle restoration

Going strictly by pizza preference, it appears to be Huron and Michigan. They were marginally the most-ordered pizzas in a promotion that raised $6,000 for the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

“They were all pretty close,” said Wesley Pikula, vice president of operations at Buddy’s. “They were within about twenty pies of each other.”

Last year, Echo reported that the popular Michigan pizza chain Buddy’s Pizza launched its Great Lakes Pizza Collection with a pledge.  more...

Fishermen alarmed by Great Lakes water levels

  #

Recent fluctuating temperatures have resulted in lower water levels in the Great Lakes and area officials and fishermen say it's a great cause for concern.

Officials are monitoring the situation very closely. Windsor fishermen say the downward trend is alarming.

“It's like someone pulled the plug and it's slowly going down," says fisherman Jim Leclair. “It's getting bad, really bad because the water was up to the levelness of that wall, and now it just seems to be going down and down.”  more...
