New Michigan State Record Great Lakes Muskie Caught in Torch Lake

On Sunday, September 27, Kyle Anderson of Rapid City, MI caught this 50-pound 8-ounce Great Lakes muskie. The fish is now the new Michigan state record. It beat the old record, set in 1984, by 2.5 pounds. Anderson was fishing in Torch Lake, near Traverse City.  more...

Maid of the Mist granted 25-year lease

The Maid of the Mist should continue providing tours on the Niagara River for 25 years, says Niagara Parks Commission chairman Jim Williams.

That ends nearly a year-and-a-half of uncertainty about the iconic boat tour.

Parks commissioners voted Friday to uphold their April 2008 decision to grant a 25-year extension of a lease that allows Maid of the Mist Steamboat Co. to operate its world-famous boat tours from provincially owned land on the Canadian shore of the Niagara River.   more...

Hank Carpenter's cross-lake personal watercraft ride a bumpy experience

MUSKEGON — Hank Carpenter rode his personal watercraft across Lake Michigan last weekend, all in the name of adventure and generating awareness for a disease.

Little did he know when he departed Muskegon on Friday morning that the loosely thrown-together stunt would result in more than 19 hours on the lake on a 9-foot-long Sea Doo. In the end, he completed the feat, traversing the 160-plus miles to Milwaukee and back, and returned safely home Saturday night.  more...

Patrol vessels make waves with high-tech equipment

The Advanced Concept Demonstrator Vessel prowls on the Detroit River on Monday. The 43-foot boats have lots of high-tech gadgets, a lot of horsepower under the hood -- they can reach 75 m.p.h. -- and could replace the slower, older vessels currently used by the Border Patrol. The sleek, 43-foot boat with a quartet of 350-horse-power engines is called the Advanced Concept Demonstrator Vessel, a $900,000 prototype that U.S. Customs and Border Protection is testing as possibly their next generation of boat.   more...
