Eyes around the world will turn to Michigan on Saturday when as many as 250 boats and 2,500 sailors set off in the 82nd annual Port Huron to Mackinac race -- among the world's longest fresh-water races with one of the largest fleets on the international circuit.

And a whole lot of landlubbers fascinated by the spectacle -- an estimated 100,000 of them -- will roam the docks in Port Huron for Friday's Boat Night party. Thousands more will be there Saturday to cheer the sailors heading out of the Black River and into Lake Huron for the race.   more...

  #
By Gabrielle Russon and Chris Killian
Kalamazoo Gazette

The beaches of Lake Michigan offer summer sand and surf unmatched in the Midwest.

But lurking below the often placid fresh water are dangers most swimmers expect to encounter only in the ocean.

Many tourists do not understand how dangerous Lake Michigan can be, said Robin Abshire, the leisure services director for the city of South Haven and its harbormaster. The lake has many hidden dangers, because swimmers can deal with invisible rip currents and undertows at a moment's notice.  more...

BOB GROSS
Paul Corneliussen will be an old goat - and he's proud of it. A Rochester Hills resident, Corneliussen will be sailing in his 25th Port Huron to Mackinac Island race - formally known as the Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Race - on Saturday. "We're pretty excited about it," said Corneliussen. "I'm taking my daughter for her first Mackinac race - she's 15. "This is my 25th Mackinac, which means I'm an old goat. "Three years ago, I made a deal with my daughter, who was 12, that she would have to wait to go with me until I was an old goat."   more

Paddling -- and sailing -- around Lake Superior

  #

Dave Freeman
Outdoors writer

Last week I took a group of tourists to Tettegouche State Park on a kayaking trip through Superior Coastal Sports. We were having lunch on a secluded beach looking out over Lake Superior when a wiry man with a large gray beard came canoeing up in a beautiful red wooden canvas canoe. It is rare to see a canoe on the big lake, so I jumped up and ran to the waters edge to hale him down. It turns out that Steve Wingard is paddling and sailing his 1940 Peterborough Canoe all the way around Lake Superior.   more...

How to describe your boat’s performance

  #
Dave Dellenbaugh

If your job on the boat allows you enough time to carefully observe other boats while you are racing upwind or downwind, you can help your team by describing your boat's relative performance. Watch the other boat for a period of time to see whether you are going faster, slower, higher or lower.   more...

Learn the Racing Rules - DVD

  #
SEA-TV Productions along with rules expert, David Dellenbaugh, the on-screen host and narrator, have designed this DVD set to make it easier to learn the international yacht racing rules.

"Learn the Racing Rules" is an excellent application of the power of video to instruct and illuminate a complex subject. Yacht racing is a very kinetic and complicated sport and the rules are very difficult to understand from reading them in the rules book. By using the power of digital video production software such as animation, computer graphics, slow motion, and stop motion, we are able to make the rules readily understandable. This along with actual racing footage and a script by one of the world’s top yacht racing rules experts makes it easier for youth and entry level racers to participate in the sport and helps experienced racers to be more confident and ultimately win more races.  more...

The Sailing's Great, Even When It's Landlocked

  #
Gary Jobson
Don't fall into the trap of thinking all sailing happens on the coasts; there are vibrant lake and river sailing clubs that are just as passionate as their saltier counterparts on the oceans. Sailing is a highly visible sport in many coastal towns, and along the shores of our Great Lakes, but there are vibrant sailing clubs operating on smaller lakes and rivers everywhere across the country. The enthusiasm for sailing in these landlocked venues is strong, and the sailors of America's inland waters are every bit as enthusiastic as those of us on our coasts.   more

New York’s canal system crippled by record flooding

  #

ALBANY (EIS) — Gov. George E. Pataki Monday surveyed the major devastation on the Erie Canal at Lock E-10 in Cranesville, Montgomery County, one of seven locks severely impacted by the heavy flooding this past week.

Though Gov. Pataki visited the area most ravaged by the flood, much of the New York State Canal System has experienced record flood levels, forcing the closure of 45 of the system’s 57 locks along 297 miles of the 524 mile waterway during the worst of the flooding.  more...

Stiffer laws may not cut drunken boating

  #
By CHRIS MACKINDER
Times Herald

CLAY TWP. - It's been stressed for years that drinking and driving don't mix with laws on the books to back that up.

State lawmakers now want to make sure the same standards apply to boaters.

Last month, legislators began considering a law that would lower the blood-alcohol limit on the water to 0.08 - matching what it now is on Michigan roads. The current standard on the water is 0.10.

Local law-enforcement officials aren't sure if it will make a difference. They said they are not convinced a stricter standard will have a sweeping impact on the number of people drinking and driving on the water.   more...
