Big boats skipping race to Mackinac

 An island in the Pacific Ocean is snatching boats that starred in last year's trek to Mackinac Island in Lake Huron.

Giants yachts Genuine Risk and Windquest are skipping by the annual Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race in favor of the bi-annual Transpac race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

But that didn't sway the enthusiasm of race organizers who gathered Thursday at the Seaway Terminal in Port Huron to discuss the July 23 event.

"This is a piece of Port Huron culture as much as it is a piece of our culture at Bayview (Yacht Club)," club spokesman Ted Everingham said during the news conference.   more...
