Drowning boy plucked from river


Wayne Arnold plunged into the running swells of the St. Clair River without a moment's hesitation.

It was a little after 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Huron Lightship site manager had not heard a call for help, but only seconds earlier, standing on the moss garden that surrounds the ship, he had seen what could have been the look of death on a tiny face.

The boy was 4 years old, Arnold later learned, but at the time, all he could think of was reaching the lifeless form not far from his museum vessel.

"He was floating on his back, about two feet under water, with his eyes bulging," Arnold recalled.

He threw off his cap, chucked the wallet from his pocket and jumped in feet first. Then, grabbing on to the boy, he held his head above water until he got to a ladder.   more...
