Hidden danger South Haven drowning draws attention to Lake Michigan's power

The beaches of Lake Michigan offer summer sand and surf unmatched in the Midwest.

But lurking below the often placid fresh water are dangers most swimmers expect to encounter only in the ocean.

Many tourists do not understand how dangerous Lake Michigan can be, said Robin Abshire, the leisure services director for the city of South Haven and its harbormaster.
