St. Clair ice jam partially cleared

The Coast Guard cutter Griffon cuts through the ice on the St. Clair River.Shipping has resumed in the St. Clair River now that some of the ice that clogged it for more than a week has been cleared.

The opening allowed Canadian icebreakers to escort a pair of tankers to Sarnia on Tuesday, said Andy Maillet, supervisor of operations for the Canadian Coast Guard's Central and Arctic region.

Maillet said a large volume of ice -- "too large an amount actually" -- began entering the river about 10 days ago and set off alarm bells.  more...

VHS may change rules for using smelt as bait

Minnesota anglers might see new regulations about using smelt as bait before the Minnesota fishing opener. Possible rule changes are under discussion by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials.

The changes would come because Cornell University researchers found viral hemorrhagic septicemia in a few fish from Superior Bay and St. Louis Bay, tributaries to Lake Superior. Smelt routinely have been harvested from Lake Superior by anglers and used as bait in inland lakes.   more...
