Man-made reef aids spawning fish

  #
Reseachers were able to show off the first success of a project Tuesday to restore spawning habitat in the St. Clair River’s Middle Channel for lake sturgeon and other native fish.“When we began to construct the reefs early this spring, we found sturgeon already starting to spawn,” said Mike Thomas, Michigan Department of Natural Resources fisheries research biologist. “We want to rebuild spawning areas that have been lost on the lower St. Clair River. To have success like this before the project is even completed is a great sign.”  more...

Help Restore Waugoshance Lighthouse!

  #
The Waugoshance Lighthouse Preservation Society has the opportunity to obtain a 2 for 1 match from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program in order to fund the completion of a Historic Structure Report. We need to submit this report to several federal entities before any renovation work can begin on the lighthouse. If we raise $10,000, the State program will double our amount and give us $20,000! The total $30,000, funded by our Indiegogo supporters (you!) and the State, will allow us to pay for the report and then begin renovation on this historic Lake Michigan lighthouse. Please join us in helping to restore Waugoshance!  more

White Lake fish as good as other lakes, but you shouldn't eat them every night

  #
LARGE MOUTH BASS.JPGYou shouldn’t eat fish from White Lake every night, but they’re no worse than fish from any other Michigan lake.

That was the conclusion from two samplings of White Lake fish done five years apart, according to Richard Rediske of Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resources Institute.

The restriction of fish consumption was one of eight “beneficial use impairments” found in White Lake when it was labeled a “Great Lakes Area of Concern” in 1985. To remove that impairment, studies had to show that the fish didn’t have any more contaminants in them than a comparable lake without White Lake’s history of pollution – not that they were safe for everyone to eat, Rediske said.  more...

Moroun revives Harsens Island bridge plan

  #

Cars wait in line for the ferry back to the main land on Harsens Island on May 14, 2012.Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel (Matty) Moroun may build a second bridge after all.

But this one wouldn't be to Canada.

Moroun's Detroit International Bridge Co. announced Wednesday it was ready to resurrect plans to build a bridge to Harsens Island, now that the owner of the island's lone car ferry service has said he plans to retire and shut his business down.

The bridge company already owns the necessary land on the mainland and the island, as part of an aborted plan to build a bridge about five years ago, said company President Dan Stamper. The company had talked to state officials and done most of the preliminary work, including pulling most of the necessary permits, Stamper said.  more...

Historic Oswego Lighthouse to be restored

  #
Oswego (WSYR-TV) -- The Oswego Lighthouse is getting a much needed makeover. City Council took the first step in a full-scale restoration Monday night. The restoration project is expected to transform the historic landmark into a tourist destination.

“It’s kind of like the Statue of Liberty for the city of New York. It’s something that people identify with the city of Oswego,” said Oswego Mayor Thomas Gillen.

The lighthouse was built in 1934 and has been vacant since 1968. Visitors like John Lever from Ontario have noticed.

“Well, it’s a little tarnished, it’s a little aged and I think there’s real opportunity, so I’m really pleased that the community would take that project on,” Lever said.  more...

Portage port eyes dredging project to improve navigation

  #

PORTAGE | A representative from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told the state port commission Thursday it will request funds to complete an important dredging project for the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor.

The only catch is that the funds likely wouldn't be available until the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, 2013.

Shamel Abou-El-Seoud, a lead engineer and chief of construction and operations for the Army Corps' Chicago district, told the Ports of Indiana Commission in a public meeting that because of the commercial importance of the port, he was confident about getting funding consideration for a project to dredge 170,000 cubic yards of sand. His hope is that the sand and sediment isn't contaminated in the same manner as the toxin-laden material extracted from the bottom of the Indiana Harbor.  more...
