Sterling Heights sailor prepares for Mackinac competition

  #

Dave Sandlin said it was the “spirit of competition” that has kept him coming back to the Bayview Mackinac Race for 26 years.

“Sometimes, I wonder why I keep doing it,” the Sterling Heights resident joked. “I definitely like to win races; that’s what I try to do.”

Sandlin and his crew will head out on the Jayhawker for this year’s race, sponsored by Bell’s Brewery Inc., July 23 from Port Huron.

They’ll be competing in the Division III Shore Course. Sandlin hasn’t won a Mackinac race, but he’s come close several occasions, finishing third four times. He enjoys the camaraderie of working together during the competition.

“A sailboat race is very much a team thing,” he said. “The whole team has to function right. The less mistakes you make, the better chance you can win.”   more...

A Sad Day on Mackinac Island

  #
Distance racing is truly a strange sport. Boats can start at similar times and—depending on their speed and the direction that they sail—experience completely different sets of conditions. Such was the case with this year's Chicago—Mackinac Race.

As reported earlier, this was a case of the 'rich getting richer'. The boats that arrived on Mackinac Island early earned two important things: a great elapsed time and a ticket out of the horrendous storm that ravaged the fleet during this classic 333-mile distance race. more

  #

When Rick Grow of Harbor Springs donated his boat to charity a few years ago, the seasoned sailor wasn't ready to give up his racing ambitions.

Grow has sailed in the Mackinac Race since the age of 12. He said racing is in his family's blood.

"I grew up racing. My dad was a sailor ..." Grow said. "It's just always been in our family. We've done it forever."   more...

Yellowbrick provides Lake Ontario 300 Challenge tracking solution

  #
Yellowbrick are pleased to be providing tracking for this year’s Lake Ontario 300 Challenge – our team is onsite in Toronto now, making the final preparations for the race.

Twenty-one years ago the Lake Ontario Single Handed Racing Society formed the Lake Ontario 300 Challenge as the ultimate long distance race for double handed sailors. Three Hundred Nautical Miles, non-stop from one end of Lake Ontario to the other and returning back to the start. The race was an inspiration after some of the LOSHRS members raced the Chicago MAC race, which is probably why the distance was set as a length slightly longer than the MAC. more...

THISTLE SPEED NOTES

  #
Believe it or not, even after all the Thistle sailing we did this year, my team and I decided we still hadn’t had enough and garnered up the will and a way to sail the 2010 Bloody Mary and Jubilee Regattas down in Atlanta and Pensacola. Even after all the years of Thistle sailing we have under our belts, you would think we would have seen it all by now and learned every lesson the Thistle has to teach but once again each event brings a new opportunity to realize how much more we can learn (or re-learn).  more...
