Should there be an official "State" Sailboat Class?

  #
There is a Michigan state flower, wildflower, tree, stone, gem, bird, mammal, reptile, fish, and even soil, so why not a state One-Design Class? The state of Maryland does indeed have a state boat, the Skipjack, so the precedence has been set, although one may argue that the Mackinac double-ender should fill that bill for Michigan. But from the standpoint of increasing recreational sailing in the state, would a representative one-design be of some interest and assistance?  more...

14-Year-Old Olivia Constants Dies In Sailing Accident

  #

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WUSA) -- A 14-year old girl who died in an accident at a youth sailing camp was wearing a trapeze harness when the boat she was on capsized Thursday in the Severn River, investigators say.

Investigators believe 14-year-old Olivia Constants may have become tangled in the trapeze harness rigging and held underwater when the 420 sailboat capsized as students practiced maneuvering the boats in the Severn River near the U.S. Naval Academy at about 3:15 Thursday afternoon.  Weather at the time was sunny and warm.  more...

Ode to a Terrible Regatta

  #
Don’t get me wrong. The regatta itself, the District 11 Laser Championships, was not terrible. In fact, it was fantastic. Hosted by the smoothly-run, beautifully-situated, Fishing Bay Yacht Club down in Deltaville, Va., on the southern Chesapeake Bay, the regatta was blessed with excellent winds, a great crowd of sailors, and a Laser-loving chef, Alain Vincey, who cooked up a spectacular Saturday-evening dinner. Even the camping was nice.  more...

How Napoleon Caused the Detroit NOOD

  #

I'm just returning from the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Detroit NOOD. It's been a long weekend, but I'm wide awake. So I'm doing what I often do when I'm ready to fall asleep—reading "War and Peace."

At the very beginning of Part 2, somewhere around page 714, depending which edition you're reading, Tolstoy goes into historian-philosopher mode, talking about the infinite number of causes, small and large, behind the Napoleonic Wars, and how removing any one cause would've prevented the war from occurring the way it did, if the war would've happened at all.  more...
