New Coast Guard ship patrols the Great Lakes

  #

PORT HURON — Last spring, veteran sailor Mike Popelka of Fort Gratiot marked a first in his life by attending the decommissioning ceremony of the U.S. Coast Guard’s aging cutter Bramble.

It took nearly two decades after he retired from active duty. But this week, Popelka, 58, is marking yet another first: The commissioning of the cutter Hollyhock.

“When (a ship) lasts 50 years, there’s not a whole lot of call for these ceremonies, so I am excited about it,” said Popelka, who retired in 1985 after serving his last four years on the Bramble.

Nearly one year after the 59-year-old Bramble was sent to a local museum, Port Huron’s new ship will officially become part of the Coast Guard fleet on Friday.

Unlike Bramble’s somber decommissioning last May, this week’s ceremony is expected to be a joyous event, an age-old maritime tradition.   more...

Sub taking its first voyage in 50 years

To the crack of christening bottles and the strains of "Anchors Aweigh'' from a Navy band, Chicago's famous U-505 submarine Thursday began its move to its new indoor location.

The 700-ton sub, drydocked outside of the Museum of Science and Industry for half a century, will be inched 1,000 feet over the next several days to the front of the museum, where it will be lowered into an underground concrete crib. After it's capped and finished with hands-on exhibits, the new climate-controlled sub base will open next spring.   more...
