Hydro-Prop, Inc. announced the Bluewater International Hydrofest

  #

Hydro-Prop, Inc. announced the Bluewater International Hydrofest Committee has signed an agreement to host an Unlimited Hydroplane race in St. Clair for the next three years. The first annual race is scheduled for August 20-22, 2004 on the St. Clair River, between St. Clair, Michigan and St. Clair Township, Ontario.

If you were at the exhibition this past June in this small riverside city, you remember the great show put on by four unlimited teams to gain support for holding a race in St. Clair in 2004. Well, it paid off. About 13,000 fans attended that day on both sides of the river and were treated to a great show and perfect weather.

The course is unique in the fact that it surrounds the middle ground shallows in that section of the river, with half of the race course in the United States and the backstretch in Canada. As many of you know, the main freighter channel runs very close to the City of St. Clair shoreline, which will make for spectacular fan viewing on the 1,800-feet of the Palmer Park boardwalk.   more...

Downstate man grateful for rescue

  #

Dennis Formosa said that while fishing for salmon, the engine on his 21-foot Thompson boat was “running like a watch.”

Then the engine quit, and he discovered that the batteries in his handheld VHF radio were dead.

The downstate sportfisherman launched his boat from Frankfort on Friday morning. He was rescued Sunday evening by the Coast Guard in waters west of Leland and south of S. Fox Island.

“I just can’t say enough about the Coast Guard and what a great bunch of guys they are,” said Formosa, 61, of Westland.   more...

Boat Town USA great event

  #

Boat Show USA was an unqualified success at Metro Beach this past weekend as everything for an outdoor boat show turned out perfect, with one exception.

Showgoers had beautiful fall weather to browse during the show run, then on Monday the weather changed dramatically.

What those in attendance during the show didn't see, is the work that goes into setting up displays ... the detailing of boats beforehand and the related equipment for the five-day show.

Many dealers had very elaborate set-ups under tents that had wooden floors, furniture and carpeting with lighting that would rival home recreation rooms. A lot of time and work went into these exhibits, both building and then taking down, and herein lies the story that is behind the scenes.   more...

Annual Boat Show USA perfect place to dream

  #

The Fall Boat Show USA is docked at Metro Beach until Sunday, offering the best and latest in boats and equipment.

This is the place where you can see and fantasize about the vessels that could transport you to destinations where forgetting your business, cell or work phone number would be rather easy.

Exploring the marshy cuts and canals of the St. Clair Flats in a small craft or considering a live-aboard lifestyle cruising boat and investigating the Great Lakes or the remote islands of the Bahamas are all possibilities worth day dreaming about.

Catching the sun's rays aboard your new boat, either locally or on the white sand beaches of the Caribbean, it's still the same sun, just the boating lifestyle you choose.   more...

Sizing up boat show: Big, small on display

  #
Photo

SANDUSKY -- From used $16,000 runabouts to 59-foot, $1.4 million monster cruisers, the in-water boat show at Cedar Point Marina has just about everything that floats.

And, with a new flying boat on display, at least one thing that doesn't float, too.

Visitors will find more than 700 yachts, cruisers and fishing boats floating on display at the 31st annual show. Best of all, though, they could find some end of the season deals.

Tom Harman of Happy Days Boating in Port Clinton was coordinating the effort Tuesday to have more than 30 boats ready for show by noon today.   more...

"I'd say this is right up there with our Cleveland show," he said. "It's one of our better shows for deals."

Maritime Museum opens new exhibit

  #
The Michigan Maritime Museum will display boat models built by David Davis. In conjunction with the "Sailing through Time: Great Lakes Maritime Art" exhibit, a special weekend will feature Davis models, most from private collections.

Davis was a prolific model builder during his retirement years. Raised during the depression in Chicago, boats were his passion. Having worked as a purser on Great Lakes passenger steamship George M. Cox, and later in the shipbuilding industry in California, Davis had extensive knowledge of vessels. When building his models, he sometimes worked from blueprints, but more often drew from his memory.   more...
