H2ONotes Sponsor Needed

  #

Mike (your humble editor) and the gang at H2ONotes need the help of our readers to keep this thing going!

We've been doing H2ONotes for more than a year now without generating a dime of income.  This isn't really so horrible as we enjoy the work, but it would be nice to see the publication grow a bit.

Last year, on the eve of the Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Race we did a little promotional thing where we gave away 2,000 Mardi Gras beads on the docks in Port Huron in just over 20 minutes.  The beads promoted a contest on our website where we gave away free lodging on Mackinac Island and other cool stuff.  We had so much fun in Port Huron we gave away another 1,000 beads at the party following the race.  It was effective marketing for H2ONotes, we found 500 new readers!

We plan on doing this again but would like to pump up the volume a bit.  Wouldn't 25,000 beads be far more effective than 3,000?  Between Port Huron and the Island there are nearly 100,000 sailors and curious onlookers.  We would like to get to know a few of them.  At the same time, if we're going to be reaching out and touching such a large group of people its a great marketing opportunity for anyone willing to sponsor us.

If it is only to share your ideas or contacts, we need your help.  Click on our wish list of things that would help us get this project off the ground.

Old Kiwi Boats go to France

  #

Resize of TPeponnet-DeanBarker-SKandler-creditsFranckSocha.jpgThe contract has been signed between the two teams for the purchase of NZL57 and the lease of NZL60 by K-Challenge until the end of the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007. At that time, NZL60, the winning boat of the 30th America’s Cup in 2000, will return to her country of origin, as she belongs to the citizens of New Zealand as a historical vessel.
Stephane Kandler, K-Challenge CEO : "To win the America’s Cup, you need to start with a winning training and development boat. Acquiring NZL57 and NZL60 is a major step forward for our team. We are pleased and honored to have worked with Team New Zealand, a legendary team that we respect and admire.
K-Challenge will take part to the first three Acts of the 32nd America’s Cup in Marseilles in September, then in Valencia in October, aboard NZL57".   more...

The classic Laser reaches 180,000 boats

  #

We have recently passed another landmark in Laser history. We have just issued building plaque number 180000. Laser has come a long way since its humble beginning as an “off the beach fun boat”. We have recently passed another landmark in Laser history.

We have just issued building plaque number 180000. Laser has come a long way since its humble beginning as an “off the beach fun boat”. In the seventies ISAF wanted the Laser as an Olympic class and we said no because at that time we felt the pressures would be too big on what was then a new concept - “take your boat out of the box, don’t change anything, just go sailing.”   more...

AC Rogue Reeves Loser In NZ High Court

  #

Few people in the AC or sailing world will be shedding any tears for Kiwi Sean Reeves.

OneWorld Challenge has won enforcement of the US$1 million award previously handed down against Reeves in an American court. The thirteen-page decision of Master H Sargisson (no joke, although "Master" is his title not his first name) of the NZ High Court was issued here today.

Reeves has until 23rd May to appeal, but already owes interest and court costs on top of the $1 million, and it will continue to add up if he does appeal. NZ legal experts previously contacted by SA gave Reeves low odds on winning this latest round, and they say his chances are even lower on appeal.   more...

Fuel Cells Weigh Anchor

  #

Full-size imageAs public awareness of hydrogen fuel cells focuses on car engines and other land-based uses for alternative energy, efforts to bring hybrid power sources to the high seas steam quietly -- if slowly -- ahead.

On April 8, Mississauga, Ontario-based Hydrogenics, which designs and builds fuel-cell systems, announced an agreement to supply a 10-kilowatt power module to HaveBlue, a Ventura, California, company developing patented hydrogen-related technology for marine applications.

The module will be a key component of a regenerative fuel-cell system designed to propel HaveBlue's X/V-1, a 42-foot Catalina demonstration yacht, said HaveBlue president, CEO and founder Craig Schmitman. The module will also help power the boat's lights, navigation and galley appliances.   more...

Fossett Ends Speed Sailing Program After Spectacular 11 Year Career

  #
22 April 2004 - Carmel, CA, USA: Two weeks after returning from his successful Round The World Sailing world record at the helm of his 125' maxi-catamaran Cheyenne, American skipper Steve Fossett announced today that he has decided to pull back from front line international speed sailing - after 11 years of spectacular record success - in order to focus on key 2004-2005 projects in aviation (altitude, speed and distance gliding plus the round the world solo airplane) as well as other new (as yet undisclosed) sporting projects on land and in the air. Cheyenne will be put up for sale.
"The round the world record has fulfilled my highest ambition in sailing" admitted Fossett Tuesday "and this just seems like the right time to stop.'"

What You Can Do About Sleep Deprivation:

  #
Lessons from Around-the-World Solo Sailors

At first approach, one may think that the problems of fatigue, alertness impairment and sleep deprivation faced by competitive athletes sailing solo around-the-world couldn't possibly relate to everyday living. However, the reality is that the issues that these competitors face are not substantially different from those experienced in the workplace and the strategies they use to deal with sleep deprivation could have a great deal of relevance. Indeed, the around-the-clock availability of key services is becoming a necessity in this era of technological innovation, increased automation, and downsizing. Hospitals must be available to handle emergencies; police and firefighters to protect our lives; trains, airplanes, and road vehicles to ensure swift transportation of people and goods across the globe; power plant operators to provide uninterrupted electrical service. Competitive pressures of the global economy are forcing a growing number of organizations and businesses to provide their services twenty-four hours a day. Furthermore, it is estimated that over 20% of the workforce in industrialized countries work some form of night or shift-work.    more...

BRADY OVERTAKES GILMOUR ON LIVELY DAY

  #

Gavin Brady and his Oracle BMW Racing crew were nearly untouchable today at the 40th Congressional Cup, event No. 4 on the 2003-’04 Swedish Match Tour.

The sound of crunching fiberglass was a sour note in Gavin Brady's otherwise brilliant day Wednesday when he extended his win streak to eight by winning all four of his races and took over first place in the Long Beach Yacht Club's 40th Congressional Cup.  http://www.swedishmatchtour.com/

Geronimo sprint Northwards

  #
Ever since she picked up the northern trade winds last night, Geronimo has been making good headway northwards. The 11-man Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric crew managed to extract themselves relatively quickly from the Doldrums by exploiting local micro-systems and keeping clear of suspect cloud formations and squalls.
Although mediocre, these conditions probably seemed relatively easy, compared with the problems of reaching and crossing the Equator.
Their task now is to head due North and catch the first available train to the Azores, for an onward connection to Brittany. The crew is now very eager to get home: “They have a rather empty look about them; I don’t know if it’s fatigue, sadness or just exhaustion”, said the skipper this morning.   more...

Luna Rossa takes a lift for the America's Cup 2007

  #

In its Luna Rossa Challenge reincarnation, the former Prada Team looks very familiar. It's another rich campaign, led by Patrizio Bertelli, Francesco de Angelis is at the helm and the grigiorosso boat is the first to get out on the water again.

Nevetheless, references to the formers campaigns are of limited use. The change of name reflects some innovations in the syndicate.   more...
