Sailors Or Swimsuit Models?

  #

What is in the Gatorade? Now Anna Tunnicliffe, the 2008 Radial gold medallist, is sailing in the buff (see below).

Something strange is going on over at US Sailing. They are running a "Meet The Team" series, which makes sense with the Olympics approaching. But someone, somewhere, deep in the bowels of the US Sailing marketing machine has decided that the best way promote sailors like Paige Railey, Amanda Clark, and Sarah Lihan is to....feature them in bikinis.  more...

19 classic wood boats compete in regatta on Lake St. Clair

  #
The smaller boats including the 6 meters go downwind on the western side of Lake St. Clair near the mouth of the Detroit River during the first annual Detroit Classic Boat Regatta 2022. The race was sponsored by the Detroit Yacht Club on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

It could have been a scene from a half century ago Saturday on Lake St. Clair, as the first Detroit Classic Boat Regatta brought 19 mostly wooden beauties skimming across the lake.

The boats -- dating from 1921 to 1974, with one boat, Wayward Wind, a reproduction built in 2006 in the classic style -- came from Lake St Clair and Lake Huron for the race, the only local sailboat racing venue devoted to classic boats.

They were an on-the-water illustration of the evolution of sailboat design, their wood framing a little gentler and their curves a little softer than modern boats.  more...

International Regatta good tune-up for Mackinac

  #
Tyson Connolly believes the Mackinac race is won at night.

So what better way to prepare for it than sailing an overnight race?

The Port Huron Yacht Club will hold its Lake Huron International Regatta Saturday. The race begins at 5 p.m. about 2 miles north of the Blue Water Bridge and will finish at Vantage Point sometime Sunday morning.

“Any boat that’s competing in the Bells Bayview Port Huron-to-Mackinac, you definitely want to get your crew out there in an overnight situation where you’re kind of re-learning the boat at night,” said Connolly, vice chairman of the International Regatta and a crewmember on Val Saph’s Rowdy. “It’s my opinion that Mackinac is won at night. You really have to maintain your focus and keep your decision-making proper.  more...

Blanchard/Burdick on Silverhawk Win A Scow Nationals In Strong Fashion - 1-4-1-1-1

  #
Seventeen A Scows descended on Pewaukee for a light air regatta. PRO Hank Stuart worked hard with his crew to successfully provide five races over the three-day event. With no sailing on Saturday, the event was a display of skill for the I-28 Silverhawk team. Owner Terry Blanchard, skipper Andy Burdick and crew Peter Keck, Joe Kutschenreuter, Jim Petersen, Ben Porter and Molly Forbes seemed untouchable and a smidge lucky on one finish. Funny how skill often translates into luck. more...

2012 Cleveland Race Week OD - Cleveland, OH

  #

Rick Rothenbuhler spent the weekend in Cleveland on board Team I-Ball, a T10 out of North Cape. They had a great weekend of sailing in a strong T10 class for their Lake Erie Championship.

Since our victorious Charleston trip, we've all be focused in on work, family, etc. and only until about a week or so ago have we put the wheels in motion for our next trip, Cleveland Race Week.  We have a strong team aboard the Team I-Ball and everyone has committed to a season of fun and this would be our 2nd event with our core group.

Cleveland Race Week is a 3-day event for the T10s and serves as the Lake Erie Championship.  Team I-Ball has won this event a time or two, but in so doing we know how tough the fleet is and how difficult the conditions can be off Edgewater Yacht Club.  We were up for the challenge on the water, along with the fun that EYC serves after racing.  more...

2012 George Fisher Memorial Regatta - Columbus, OH

  #

2012 George Fisher Memorial Regatta - Columbus, OH Ernie Dieball files this report from the Interlake circuit. He and his wife, Jacqueline, nearly won, but their story is fun to follow.

Young families all have several challenges when it comes to free time and planning travel.  The packing, logistics and general lack of time make it exciting, to say the least.  Jacqueline and I have been sailing the Interlake through Thursday nights at Jolly Roger Sailing Club and on the circuit, having sailed Chief's, Sandusky & now Hoover.  It is fun for us to sail together and to take along our son, Dean.

We arrived to Hoover and had a minor set back in that our babysitter was delayed.  We used this as a unique opportunity to take Dean for a sailboat ride.  The wind was light and it just seemed fun!  He enjoyed it.  We had fun making sure he got from side to side and took in all the sights and sounds.  We ended up DNF in that first race, but we set the hook and he's very excited to go sailing again!   more...

Chad Coberly Wins Brownwater Regatta

  #
2012’s early summer stop on the Melges 17 schedule commenced this weekend with the BrownWater Regatta sailed out of Grand Rapids Yacht Club on Reeds Lake. This event featured fifteen boats and "local special conditions" ranging from 3-20+ knots in varying shades of Southerly breeze. There is no magic to sailing on this small lake, it is hand-to-hand combat at all times and the first guy to the dark water gets the prize.  more...

Ed Eckert and Matt Schmidt Win 2012 C Scow National Championship!

  #
A new winner is named but the fleet could see it coming. Last season it was a rehearsal for this week's event. Ed Eckert with Matt Schmidt from Cedar, WI, has sailed at the top of the game for several years but never has taken the National title. This year Ed and Matt sailed a tough series but it took the last tack to detemine the winner. After six races, it was a slim 2 points separating A136 from a young B16 George and Jim (not so young) Kutschenreuter. With one throwout after six races, it was a tight race among five sailors. more...

Ain’t talkin’ ’bout love
My love is rotten to the core
Ain’t talkin’ ’bout love
Just like I told you before, yeah before

Alex Van Halen, Edward Van Halen, Michael Anthony, David Lee Roth

Some songs trigger replays or even fantasies. Van Halen‘s Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love is one that places me on any number of Michigan’s infamous beaches; playing in the sand and surf while drinking Bell’s Oberon on a hot, sunny, beautiful, summer day.

With the approach of summer and vacation from school I thought it appropriate to announce a temporary departure from my College Life Replay Mini-Series. Instead, I will share glimpses at summertime childhood memories.  more...

U.S. sailor has world title, seeks Olympic gold

  #

Growing up in Bayport, N.Y., on Long Island's South Shore, Debbie Capozzi remembers going out for Italian ice on summer nights with her parents, brother and two sisters.

Four years ago, her family opened its own shop in Patchogue, N.Y., named Tina's Italian Ices after Capozzi's younger sister, Christina.

When she's not helping dish up summertime treats, Capozzi, 30, is part of the USA's most successful sailing team. more...
