Toledo's port saw 10.34 percent decline in '08

Cargo volume at Toledo's seaport declined by slightly more than 10 percent during 2008, with grain traffic accounting for the biggest decline, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority statistics show.

Warren McCrimmon, the port authority's seaport director, said virtually the entire decline, including the 53 percent drop in grain cargoes, was attributable to the region's faltering economy.   more...

US Army report: recreational boating has US$9bn economic impact on Great Lakes

A report by the US Army Corps of Engineers released last month says that boating on the Great Lakes has an annual US$9.4bn economic impact on the Midwestern region. The John Glenn Great Lakes Recreational Boating Report noted that about 911,000 boaters visit the Great Lakes annually, and support 60,000 jobs. Using US Coast Guard registration data for 2003, the report said there were almost 4.3 million recreational boats in the eight Great Lakes states. That comprised a third of all US recreational vessels.

Clinton blames Chicago company for leaky water tower

CLINTON -- Clinton Public Property Commissioner John Wise is blaming a Chicago company for a leak in the city’s new west-side water tower that dumped half a million gallons of water on Illini Drive last week.

Federal court upholds Michigan ballast water law

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A federal appeals court Friday upheld a Michigan law designed to prevent oceangoing freight ships from bringing invasive species to the Great Lakes in their ballast water.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati rejected a challenge to the statute filed by nine shipping companies and associations. They claimed the measure interferes with interstate commerce and is pre-empted by federal law.   more...

USA. Coast Guard to conduct pollution response training in Sturgeon Bay

Members from the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment (MSD) Sturgeon Bay will be conducting pollution response training beginning October 22, 24 and 28, 2008.

This is the second time MSD Sturgeon Bay has coordinated pollution response training, which included boom deployment exercises in Marinette, Wis. and Menominee, Mich.

Michigan Clean Marina Program Workshops Scheduled

October 13, 2008, Livonia, MI – Two Michigan Clean Marina Workshops have been scheduled for those marina operators who have a desire to become designated clean marinas under the program.  The Muskegon workshop is scheduled for November 7th at the Bayside Centre which is located at 3006 Lakeshore Dr.  The Bay City workshop is scheduled for December 5th at the Doubletree Hotel on the Riverfront.  Both sessions run from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and require pre-registration. more
